Geranios Galore – A container garden delight
Across the country, geraniums flaunt their red and scarlet, pink, pink and white flowers a gay abandon that few can compete with other plants. In the stairwells of burning of the city rooftops, in window boxes on suburban and country houses in the tubs and pots on terraces and patios, and hanging baskets on porches of summer cottages, they are loved and appreciated plants
It needs sun to flower, tolerate shade, which are normally treated as a plant. What he feels is too much moisture and a rich diet. Keep very moist, the leaves turn yellow and as a soil heavy, one high in nitrogen plants go in the foliage and flower sparingly.
Even if you choose no other plants could have a garden in pots diverse area of single and double, deluxe or variegated leaves, scented leaves, ivy and Lady or Martha Washington geraniums (also called the show or fancy geraniums), not to mention a few oddities of cactus and climbing types.
The zonal geranium is characterized by dark spots, circular green rounded leaves. Double types dominate trade and are offered by florists in the spring for planting in gardens and flower pots.
Multicolored geraniums, with leaves that are often brightly colored, are attractive, even out of bloom. Located in Green leaf geraniums and other green plants, potted plants add color and pattern varied.
, Monitoring the ivy leaf geranium are among the most abundant flowering when grown under favorable conditions. They dislike shade and high humidity and thrive best in climates with warm days and cool nights, as in California.
Washington man, considered the handsomest of geraniums, are not so easy to grow. Like ivy leaf, they prefer cool nights and warm sunny days, preferring shelter from wind and sun all day.
If you are a geranium gardener, you may want to increase their collection of potted plants with few climbing geraniums and cactuses. They will give you strange and fascinating shapes of flowers and will continue to attract comments.
Geraniums flourish and look good in bottles, cans and planters. They thrive in various soil mixtures if drainage is good. To Bloom, abundant, however, provide a special foliage preparation, not rich in nitrogen, or lush flowers and few results. I have success with garden soil good and a 5-10-5 fertilizer, seed and bone meal. During the growing season, plants respond to a low-nitrogen liquid fertilizer.
Al transplant, is generous with drainage material to ensure free passage of water. As with any plant, always water with care, because too much or not enough can be harmful. The best rule is to water when the soil is dry. Then, soak the soil well and do not water again until the plants need. If the soil is kept too wet, the leaves turn yellow, if too dry they wilt and discolor.
Not even to maintain the growth of plants, containers turn occasionally. Remove yellow leaves and faded flowers, especially distracting on plants at the gates or any other key locations. If rain rots and disfigures the center florets of the head, shoot with your fingers, leaving bouquets of flowers and buds outside unmarred.
If you want plants for next spring, take two to four stakes in. in August or early September. Watch for the mature stalks (with separate sheets together) that break easily as a string bean. Woody growth is hard roots and succulent tips tend to rot. Before planting the cuttings distributed in a tone for several hours, the leaves will lose excess moisture.
When ready to plant, cut the lower leaves, allowing two or three to each cup. Also pull small wings on the stem, because they tend to rot. Dip the root ends with hydrated lime to prevent decay and then insert halfway into an apartment or a large pot of pure sand or a mixture of sand and peat. With geraniums, rooting powders are hardly necessary. When the cuttings develop roots inches long, they are ready to throw in another flat or for separate planting in pots 2 ½ inches. Fill with a mixture of three parts sandy loam and peat moss or mulch part. After planting, keep in the shade during the early days, before returning to cold weather.
When cuts have developed separate strong root systems, from a 3 ½ – or 4-inch pots. Use the potting mix As before, with bone meal added. Later, as established plants begin to grow, feed regularly with a fertilizer high in phosphorus, as 5-10-5 or 4-12-8.
To keep plants bushy and to encourage branching, pinch, while small, starting when they are three to four inches high. Provide sunny windows, and keep passing the pots to prevent lopsided growth. Water regularly but allow the soil to dry slightly between applications
Plants May is winter in cold cellars with little light. Just remember that less light, the refrigerator temperature should be. Because excess heat and cause spindly growth insufficient light that undermines a healthy plant.
Gardeners with cellars or shelters when temperatures remain above zero, it can geraniums Winter upside down from the ceiling. The dead looking sticks are in pots or in the garden in warm weather, be surprised when they become glorious flowering plants.
